My bad, what I should have said...
I should have said that people who review books for publication, as a general rule, love books, rather than describing the whole industry that way. You're right, the publishing industry exists to make money. In fact, I think that's why it's in such trouble.
Most the people I knew in publishing did love books and that's why they worked there. But it was a smaller publishing house, not one of the bigs, and the people I knew there were editors, copyeditors, proofreaders, marketing people, etc. Not the executives. I'm sure there are many executives at the bigs who don't care much about books and look only at the bottom line.
I also knew a few people working at lower levels in the bigs in New York, and I would say the same about them, their salaries were so low that they had to love books to be there.
