Fake memoirs, part 3 -- Scott Simon's theory

On NPR's "Weekend Edition Saturday" this morning, host Scott Simon offered a theory about the motivation behind these fake memoirs: avoiding critiques by editors and critics.

His theory: If you've written a raw memoir about the down-and-dirty side of life, or about the trauma of your past, who's going to give you a hard time about your prose style?

He's probably read one or more of the books, which I have not, and it's a theory that makes sense.
